Smt. Thatra Lakshmanachari Alamelu, Chairman cum Managing Director, Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd., the first woman to be appointed to that position of a Public Sector General Insurance Company, belongs to our Sourashtra Community.

Smt. Alamelu, a native of Woriur, Trichy, is the eldest of four children of Late Sri. Thatra Balaraman Lakshmanachari and Smt. Sabitha.

Her elder brother is working in Boeing Corporation, Seattle. Her younger brother is a leading dentist in Puducherry and younger sister is an Asst Professor in the Horticulture Research Institute of TNAU, Periyakulam.

She is married to Pattnam Umashankar, a native of Shevapet, Salem and has a daughter.

Smt. Alamelu did her schooling in Lucknow as her father was working there, as an Engineer in Indian Railways. She did her Graduation and Post-Graduation in History and is a University of Madras Rank Holder and Gold Medalist. She is also an Associate of Insurance Institute of India.

Smt T L Alamelu joined The New India Assurance Co. Ltd as a Direct Recruit Officer in 1983, immediately after completion of post-graduation. She has worked in various capacities in Head office, Regional Offices & Branch Office thus giving her an edge of understanding the ground level to strategic level decision making.

In August 2008, after a stint of 25 years in New India Assurance, she was transferred to United India Insurance Co. Ltd., Mumbai, on promotion as Deputy General Manager

In October 2012,she got elevated as General Manager and posted in Chennai.

In Oct 2016, she was appointed as Director & General Manager in The New India Assurance Company Limited. She is one of the youngest Director & General Manager in Public sector General insurance companies in India.

She was featured as one of the 100 Influential Women in Re-Insurance by ‘Intelligent Insurer’ in 2015.

She worked as a Council Member of Insurance institute of India, Mumbai and contributed to insurance education & training. She likes knowledge sharing and thereby value creation down the line.

In May 2017 appointed as Chairman cum Managing Director of ‘Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd., after a stint of 34 years in various fields of Insurance.
